Our field promise

Why travel with Okapi

  • Maximum 8 travelers, always. Every departure is capped at 8 — space to work, flexibility to adapt, and real attention from your leader when the moment does not wait.
  • Professional photographic leadership. Every photography expedition is directed by a working professional photographer — not a tour manager with a camera.
  • Photography-first design. Days built around light, animal behavior and seasonality — never a sightseeing checklist.
  • Expert local partners. Specialist guides and operators who improve access, timing and every decision in the field.
  • Thoughtful pacing, honest promises. Time to wait, observe and work a scene properly. Sightings can never be guaranteed. Conditions can — preparation, positioning and deep respect for the wild.

Okapi expeditions are directed by Co-Founder Álvaro Cubero — Canon EOS Master Ambassador, published in National Geographic, two-time TEDx speaker, Smithsonian Photo Contest finalist and international photo-competition judge.

Experience earned in the field

Real travelers. Real destinations. Years in the field.

Scenes from expeditions our leaders have guided and photographed — travelers at work from volcano dawns and northern harbours to savanna sunsets, across years of field experience on four continents.

In the field

Photographing wildlife: what the experience feels like

A well-designed expedition gives you more than access to nature — it helps you use it well: when to wait, when to reposition, when the light or behavior is about to shift. Okapi trips are built around actual image-making, with hands-on guidance from your expedition leader — settings, composition, positioning and reading behavior — where it matters most.

You do not need to be a professional. You need curiosity, patience and a genuine interest in the natural world — and you return with stronger images, sharper judgment and a deeper connection to the places you have worked in.
